Hi Scotty,
I have a concern with a possible timing chain noise in my 2016 RB Hyundai Accent.
My Model has the 1.4ltr Kappa engine with the CVT auto transmission.
The car is also fairly low mileage with just under 49000 kilometres on it.
I have always serviced and maintainted the vehicle meticulously.
I am the second owner and the car was in the family before I owned it. I got the car at about 25000 kilometres and vehicle was service regularly before I owned it.
The issue is what sounds like a slight timing chain rattle only under light acceleration when driving and it only happens at low RPM's just above 1500rpm and under 2000rpm and it is generally happening when doing speeds of about 20 kph to under 60kph does not happen at speeds above 60 kilometres per hour.
it will only happen within that acceleration band and then as soon as I get out of the particular band it will stop.
The car has made that noise pretty much since I got it about 2 years ago. I got my mechanics to suss it out early on after getting the car and they said it sounds like it could be a timing chain tensioner but because its got such low mileage it shouldn't need to be replaced for a while.
Ive noticed the noise becoming a bit more persistent lately and sometimes it is even happening as soon as I accelerate now still under light acceleration but rather than kicking in once the car builds up a bit of speed within the bandwidth mentioned above it happens also just as the car starts moving from standstill but will only be for a second or two then will stop and then start happening again once I am under light acceleration within the speeds mentioned above.
It has been quite hot the last couple of weeks with the weather and I have also been using 98 premium in the car the last couple of weeks since I've noticed the noise a bit more persistent. Don't know if these factors make any difference but thought I would mention them.
Is this something I need to worry about?
Should I have my mechanics take the timing cover off to check if there is any issues going on?
Thank you fro your help with this.
Well I'd worry about the car in general because they're not made all that well. And some of those they actually have to replace the engines cuz they were built wrong. So I would take it into a Hyundai dealer and see if there's anything that's covered. They really are terrible vehicles in the long run. But if it makes noise and goes away as soon as it starts my advice would be get rid of the stupid thing and get a Toyota
