2017 Chevrolet Silverado reliability opinions

I own a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 1500 4 wheel drive crew cab short bed truck with the 6.2L gasoline engine & the 6 speed transmission with about 21,500 miles.

I usually get 13-17 MPG in the city & 23-27 MPG on the highway doing 75 MPH. I have got 30 MPG on the highway for a short time.

It has had only 1 recall for the brake pedal pressure.

Another problem was with the transmission shifting in & out of gear. The dealership said it was because the factory didn't use the correct transmission fluid to start with.

The only other problem I had was with the dealership not being able to patch a couple of tires. the patches would fall off & I needed to buy 2 new tires. If I would have been able to find the leaks, I would have plugged the tires and done with it.

Does the 6.2L engine use solid lifters because the engine has always made a lot more noise than the 5.3L engine I had in my 2016 & 2011 Silverado's?

What are your thoughts on the life of the truck.

The older Silverados were great but Chevy's quality has gone totally down hill and I would drive that truck for a bit longer and sell it for something else before you run into major problems. Can't believe they didn't even use the right transmission fluid.... shows what kind of quality they have.

Get rid of the truck, but don't expect to get a lot of money for it. Most dealers don't like them because they fail so much and have a bad rep they're a hard sell. Whenever they come in on trade, they usually just get wholesaled-out.

The transmission fluid from the factory was the correct fluid at the time the truck was assembled. The dealer lied. GM played around with various fluids at various time frames, but the fluid wasn't a problem at all, it was the computer programming and the torque converters. All the dealers know this !

If you go to and idiotic dealer that can't put a patch on a tire, why bother going there ??

The 6.2L does not use solid lifters. At least, not by design, GM can get very inventive about building junk.

And if you have illusions about keeping the truck, at least disable the engine shut-down (an after-market device that connects to the OBD port). But then again, at 21k engine damage to at least 4 cylinders has probably already happened.

I know the 6.2L can be a great, old-tech pushrod V8 engine, but GM keeps messing with it and mating it transmissions that are only known for failing.

If you have noise, check your valve springs. GM just issued a major recall sweeping across all their 6.2 V8 platforms for defective valve springs.

@mod_man
When did GM issue the recall?
I have not received a recall notice nor does it show up on my monthly OnStar report.

My error. It was for the new trucks, not the '17's. It was issued last month.
