2017 passat engine making weird noise and found a spring in engine compartment. Also something is rubbing in there that is creating metal powder around the alternator pulley

Odds are the alternator is broken prey it's only that it could be pieces of the alternator that flew off if there's mail around the alternator generally it means the alternator is broken
