2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 Multiple Maintenance Questions

I would like suggestions from others who may have more knowledge about Toyotas than me and hopefully you all may have knowledge about my specific vehicle.

My vehicle is a 2017 Toyota TRD Sport 4x4 with the 2GR-FKS Engine and the towing package too. I currently have 32,700 miles on it. I used my scan tool and it has no codes at all it is also an automatic transmission.

Earlier today (Thursday April 21, 2022) I went down to a Toyota dealership to set an appointment to have my vehicle's engine oil changed, tires rotated and I also told the service advisor that I would like to get the coolant changed as well since the same coolant has been in my truck for 5 years now and when I tested it using some testing strips it showed that it needs to be changed soon because it is starting to become to acidic. I also mentioned to the service advisor that I would like the thermostat on my truck changed at the same time since there won't be any coolant in the engine when they drain the old coolant and before they put in the new coolant in.

The service advisor told me that it would cost me additional $350 plus the cost of the thermostat just to change the thermostat at the same time the coolant flush would be done. Also the service advisor told me that my truck is too new to change the thermostat now and to wait for it to start to fail.

But I am trying to think of things to change BEFORE they start to fail.

I really think it is outrageous to charge an additional $350 just to change the thermostat at the same time while flushing the coolant. The service advisor said that it costs so much to change the thermostat for this engine because it is located in a place that is difficult to get to and that the technicians have to take half the engine apart to get to it.

The service advisor also told me that I do NOT need to have my vehicle's engine oil changed or my tires rotated now because this person said that I have only driven 2,250 miles since it was last done. Which is true. I had my vehicle's engine oil changed at 30,450 miles on it. But the last time I had this done was 6 months ago. This is when the same dealership changed the engine oil and I asked them to use fully synthetic motor oil. They told me that they will use Mobil 1 Synthetic motor oil.

So the service advisor basically told me to give them a call when I have driven at least another 2,500 miles or in six months. Then at that time to set up an appointment to get these things done. So I didn't get anything done to my truck today when I was driving back to my town here in Wyoming I was thinking of these questions.

Is it better to wait to have my vehicle's engine oil changed by millage or by time?

Do you all think I should have the thermostat changed now or to wait until it starts to fail or completely fails????

HOW LONG DO THE TOYTA THERMOSTATS LAST? The service advisor told me that they last a very long time. Which didn't help at all.

Is it true that they have to take apart half the engine to get to the thermostat? I thought the thermostat was located close to the front of the engine by the big radiator fan.

I live in Wyoming and as some of you may know this is the least populated state out of all 50 states (2020 Census State of Wyoming = 576,851) and it is the 10th largest state by land mass. So I don't want my truck to break down on me when I am in between cities and out in the middle of nowhere.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Change your engine oil (using full synthetic) every 5000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

I’d wait to have it changed, atleast until your first coolant flush. The replacement interval should be mentioned in your owner’s manual.

For other general maintenance items, please read your owner’s manual maintenance section, because the intervals should be clearly mentioned in there.

All the best!

Find a competent, independent mechanic to do what you want to do and tell the dealer to shove it.
