Hey scotty i thought about buying a 2018 diesel s class for around 45grand. How reliable are todays mercedes diesel engines and what about their transmissiions
They are reliable while brand new. As they age or you put mileage on them, they will be extremely money pits and unreliable. On top of that, if you live in the US, almost no one knows how to work on those diesels which results in paying top dollar in dealerships for every little thing. Check out their resale value.
Mercedes diesels have a mystique based on the legendary forever-cars of the 70's and 80's, like the 240D.
But the new ones are crap, straight up. Hard to think of "Mercedes Diesel" and "planned obsolescence" in the same sentence, but here we are.
The S class is basically a computer world on wheels. One thing breaks, and you are forced to fix it for a ton of money, and no one knows how to work on them, the dealers are all trying to drain your bank account, and the modern Mercedes diesels are terrible.

Here is a video about how modern Mercedes diesels age;

Also, what a waste paying 45 grand for a 3 year old Mercedes. Might as well lease it. A few years down the road it will be worth 10-15 grand, and there goes all that money just for a few years of ownership.
Thanks for all the comments really appreciate it.
The things is i always wanted something like an s class or a 5 series (as a diesel daily) And i thought because i live in germany maintnence wouldnt be that big of a problem since bmw and mercedes are german i still have to do some research on that but i originaly thoght buying a luxury car that i can daily for the rest of my life and i wanted to ask what luxury cars are reliable and long lasting from mercedes bmw etc. lexus’es can be found here but mostly with +100k miles (in general there a not a lot of toyotas hondas lexus‘es etc in germany)
Being in Germany, Mercedes quality is better, but in general after 7 8 years of age they fall apart. You might think of a lease, or consider buying a used Lexus.
The higher mileage Lexus is much better than Mercedes or BMW. But make sure the maintenance has been done on the car you consider.
