Scotty, Although my wife has heard you say to stay away from GM trucks, she insist I ask. We have a 2019 Silverado we leased. Should we buy it at the end of the term. We had back luck with two used Fords, a Ranger and F150, so ran away. Our main use for the truck was to move our daughter to and from college. Now we need it to put a boat in the water in May and take it out in late October. But like other folk once you have a truck you find other uses. We do love the ride in this 4x4 Z71 truck on the highway.
Should we buy this or some good used truck? Buy or Lease?
I wouldn't buy it out. They do ride good and have nice interiors, no arguement there. But the mechanical side of things is where the trouble is.
The AFM system causes all kinds of issues down the road (oil consumption, collapsed lifters). AFM = Active Fuel Management in case you weren't aware. This is the system that shuts down cylinders to give you better gas mileage as you drive. The trucks also just aren't built all that solid unfortunately.
If you do like a truck, or need a truck, a Tundra will outlast a GM 10 times out of 10. I'd go that route.
Thank You. Used is likely where I will end up, and the used Totoyas are pricey. New or Used then?
Used is fine as long as you have a mechanic check it out before you buy. You can save quite a bit over the new cost.
Again Thank You. Tundra seems to be the groups truck of choice. Scotty had an issue with the location of the starter. Tundra or Tacoma and must be 4x4 where I am.

Mod_Man is absolutely correct. GM quality is not what it used to be. Also those engines are direct injection only and you’ll have to deal with some carbon buildup over time. 2019 MY was the first year of that generation to get the 10-speed AT which is not true and tried. What’s going to happen 100,000+ miles from now to it? No one really knows, and you don’t want to find out the hard way. You were smart to lease the truck in the first place. At the end of the term, I would strongly recommend looking into buying a Tundra instead.

Go used unless you keep finding the used prices are slightly less than brand new AND you plan to keep the truck for as long as possible. Scotty’s own son had been looking to buy used for a Toyota Tacoma and finally went with a brand new one since used prices were not that much lower and he also knew it would be a truck he’d keep forever. But try going used first. If buying used, make sure an independent, honest mechanic checks it out still (even though it’s a Toyota).

Scotty was referring to the V8 in the Tundra but not the Tacoma (it has the V6). But overall, the Tundra will be the most reliable of the full size trucks. Both come with 4x4 as an option.
Personally I wouldn’t, if you buy that truck out for long term you will see just how all those electronics in that Z71 are absolute crap. I’d dump it and head over to the Toyota dealership and get you a Tundra.

Good question, You are 100% right anything with that Toyota badge is on it is going to have a higher price. I would go the used route unless you have the money for a new Tundra . I’m the type I pay cash for my vehicles and own outright. You should have no issue finding a great used Tundra. Just because it’s a Toyota doesn’t make it gold though, the dealer/seller sometimes needs to have a reality check. Take Scottys advice and whatever you’re looking at have a mechanic throughly check it out and proceed from there. Best of luck my friend👍

Definitely, and remember if you come on Scottys forum most, and I mean like 99%, of the people on here are going to recommend Toyota every time, all the time. A Tacoma wouldn’t be a bad choice either, I will say even at 5’9 I feel cramped when I get into those Tacoma’s. Not a lot of leg room at all in my opinion. But they are some decent little trucks.
Well I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 as well and I haven't had trouble with it yet except for P0300 code but I checked and I just have to replace the plugs. But I have 110k miles on mine. I bought it in March 2019 and just last year I put 66,389 miles on it. No issues what so ever. No engine or transmission trouble. Still have original coolant, brakes pads too believe it or not. I haven't done anything to the truck. I tow 8500lbs daily. 500 to 850 miles a day. Even when I take the truck to the dealer they are surprised I have this many miles on my truck in such a short period of time. If it were a diesel (which was my fault in not buying one) they would be surprised. I tow thru Colorado a lot, up the 15 from Vegas to Salt Lake city which is almost constant uphill, thru Yellowstone into Ennis, MT. I've been everywhere with my truck and honestly its the danm best truck I've ever owned.
But thats just my experience.
