I’ve heard of the new oil 0w-16, the Jetta takes 0w-20, and I heard Scotty saying to switch to the lighter weight ? Just want some advice before switching. It’s supposed to be for these GDI engines
I suggest sticking to the 0w-20 oil. Technically you would want a heavier weight oil, such as 0w/5w-30/40 which they used to recommend a few years ago for these GDI engines because of how hot they run. Remember that the oil is used to lubricate the turbocharger in GDI engines as well. 0w-20 is pretty light for an engine that gets hot like this, and it's strictly recommended for better fuel economy. I would only use the 0w-16 oil for engines that recommend it as they are specially designed for that oil weight. They did the same switch to 0w-20 for BMW, but I'm sticking with my usual 5w-30.
@razmigb
Thanks! This last oil change I did put in 5w-30 because how light the oil was and it seemed to run better. Should I stick with the 5w-30?
Yes. And honestly, the fuel economy benefits of 0w-20 are not noticeable at all. I'd prefer better lubrication over fuel economy.
Always stick to the manufacturer's recommendation for oil. They designed the car and built it not anyone else.
