2020 Sienna Fuel gauge reads low

The owner's manual says that the fuel tank is 20 gallons. When I drive it until the low fuel light comes on and fill it up it takes less than 16 gallons.  Other late model Sienna forums also complain about this discrepancy. There is also been a recall on the Nippon Denso fuel pumps for many Toyota vehicles including this vehicle and I know Scotty recommends never to let the fuel tank get lower than a 1/4 tank because the fuel is used to cool the fuel pump. As a precaution, do you think that Toyota reprogrammed the gauge so the owner will always keep at least 4 to 5 gallons in the tank to keep the fuel pump cool?

Sure, they set it so that you have at least 60 miles or so before you run dry. All my cars, the fuel light comes on at least several gallons before empty.

On all of my older Toyotas (86 Cressida and a 2004 Sienna) , the low fuel light came on when there was about 1 gallon of gas left.

@kennyk interesting, I know when I bought my 98 4Runner, the guy sold it to me and just as I headed out the low fuel light came on. I headed home, but didn't pass a gas station for just over 50 miles, at least 2 1/2 gallons worth before finding one. I know I drove my matrix at least 30 miles after the fuel light comes on, and I still had some extra to spare. One gallon is kinda scary.

it's by design and it's called your "reserve".

I can get about 60 miles after the fuel light comes on. (on all vehicles I've ever owned)

t 4 to 5 gallons in the tank to keep the fuel pump cool?

no. the pump is cooled by the fuel going THROUGH it . Not around it.
