Scotty, very interested in a 2021 GMC AT4 1500 with the 6.2 10 speed combo or a 2021 Ford F-150 lariat sport 3.5 TT ecoboost that also has the same 10 speed. Which would you go with? I would be towing a 12,500 lb parasail boat every so often but not frequently enough where I would need a diesel. I have had ford techs tell me to get the 6.2 or a 5.0 and I have had GM techs tell me to get the 3.5 because it would tow better due to the turbos. But they both admitted to the 3.5 being a hit or miss engine. Reliability doesn’t scare me because I take care of my stuff and do all my suggested maintenance ahead of schedule. V8 or V6 TT making even more HP and torque. Just wanted your professional opinion. Thanks!
Keep in mind, all the maintenance in the world does not fix or prevent terrible engineering and use of crap electronic components/ parts. Out of the brands you mentioned I would buy a F250 with either the 6.2 or the 7.3 gas motors. AVOID the 5.0 and the Ecoooops motors at all costs. And baby that 10 speed transmission the whole time you own that truck and just avoid GM altogether. Both Ford and GM in my opinion has just taken a complete dive in overall quality/ reliability and customer service.
The Tundra is not set up for this kind of work. The max towing for a tundra is 8000 base model and 10,100 with the V8. You would blow it up trying to use it for HD work like towing 12K lbs.
Ignore the Toyota people on this question... They are recommending things based on reliability stereotypes instead of facts and personal experience.
I would really recommend the F-250. The build quality is there - more so than in the F-150.
If you can sacrifice your bits and features of your lariat you can get a better built truck...
The Coyote 5.0L V8 has supposedly had oil burning issues. Our pipefitting union who bought a fleet of 2018's with it hasn't had any problems, but there have been a couple people with oil burning problems on this forum.
As for the GMC... the 2500's are much better made. I also don't believe the Sierra AT4 has enough towing to do what you are wanting to do, like the Tundra.
If you really want a towing machine for work, get an XLT F-250 or a Sierra 2500 instead of that Sierra 1500 or F-150.
If you don't want a 3/4 ton but really are going to tow all of that weight, get an F-150 with the 6.2 V8.
But I would definitely sacrifice your interior toys and get an HD truck if you are actually going to use it for its purpose.
@7-3punchina3-4 I mostly agree with you. Especially the whole Tundra towing situation. I mean this forum is 100% Toyota bias (and I understand why most of the time). However, I mean your name says it all haha you’re going to lean towards Ford which I think the Super Duty’s are decently made. I just hate the 10 speed transmission and the over use of aluminum and GDI/turbo gas motors. Also Ford customer service is all but non existent anymore. They have made it clear they don’t care about the customer.
@USAFdozerpilot That's fine. I agree, the 10 speed hasn't been the best. I also have had negative experiences as of late with ford customer service regarding the class action lawsuit on my Focus' transmission. I also liked the older generations of F series trucks without the aluminum, but can you really blame Ford for ever-tight GOV't regs?
🙂 Good talk
But I would say the Ford is the lesser of the evils, but the GMC isn't a TERRIBLE vehicle.
@7-3punchina3-4 Completely agree with the Government reg situation. And 100% agree with Ford being above GM without a doubt (that company shouldn’t even exist anymore). I’d just stick to the super duty lineup and not even consider a F150. The 6.2 is proven and ready to roll while the 7.3 is still not proven it’s a simple design. And I believe the 6.7 stroke is a pretty decent motor overall. The good folks on here scream Tundra all day and that’s fine for the person who only tows his toys around a few times a year. What they fail to realize is the blue collar/ rancher type folks who make hauling heavy a part of their lives. Tundra isn’t made for all that.
@USAFdozerpilot preach, man. Anytime I try to point that out I get ringed with downvotes 😆
Sometimes I get the feeling the majority of the people on this forum thinks they know everything from watching some Kilmer videos. I just do my best to help my brothers out based on personal experience and facts.
@7-3punchina3-4 yeah it’s tough on here and daring to go against Toyota. But the reality is they aren’t in the market for heavy haulers in the US. They want to stick with a 1/2 ton and that’s fine. But when you’re lifestyle or job involves constant hauling and such well American manufacturers figured that one out awhile ago. And although I think they’ve all gone downhill in overall quality. They still have built the 2500 and 3500s pretty stout in my opinion.
The heavy haulers are probably the only things keeping them in the auto business.
@mountainmanjoe that and Toyota's prices
true
Honestly if it wasn’t for Cummins, Duramax, and Powerstroke I think the American and Italian manufacturers would be in serious trouble. (I don’t consider Ram to be American anymore).
Step up to the F-250 or the 2500HD to save yourself a lot of headaches. Plus you'll be able to tow what you want without straining anything.
For towing 12,000+ lbs, I would avoid the F150 and the Sierra 1500 since both have had plenty of issues and go straight to the heavy duty versions of each, but at the same time you don’t need to go to diesel. You may consider the following trucks below:

Isn't GM being sued for those 10-speeds right now?
I agree with others about getting a heavier duty model. 12,000lb is pushing it for a wimpy 1/2t model.
ahhh! So our two local yokels teamed up to design this turdsmission.
neither if you want one get an early 2000s one
f250
Be a smart cookie. Get a Toyota Tundra and never worry about the Ecoboost engines or lack of GM’s quality, in their late model products.
Tundra could not handle what I would ask it to do. Plus it’s power train is ancient and its 2000’s interior doesn’t equate to a 50k truck. And ford and GM sell more trucks in a quarter than Toyota sells in a year. If there were that many tundras on the road, they’d have some issues too
Ancient doesn't necessarily mean bad. I would rather have an older more reliable tranny than a new one that doesn't last, but you're not wrong about that other stuff. Didn't GM put those good Allison transmissions in some of their trucks? It's probably the most important component for towing.
