Hello,
I have put down a refundable deposit on a 2022 Camry XSE 2.5L 4 cylinder with the 8 speed automatic transmission. 2 questions before I decide to proceed with the purchase:
1. Does the 2.5 cylinder engine have oil burning issues like the Toyota 2AZ-FE engine had?
2. I have heard the Toyota 8 speed transmission shifted a bit strange when they introduced it. Has it improved since the 2018 Camrys were introduced?
Thank you for your help!
The modern 2.5 liter doesn’t burn oil. Toyota recommends changing the oil every 10,000 miles… DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. Change that oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles and change the transmission fluid every 50k miles. As for the transmission, yes this transmission is weird but it seems to be more of an annoyance than a reliability issue as I’ve already seen 2018/2019s with 200k+ miles on the original engine and transmission and only heard of one person having a transmission fail on them… due to lack of maintenance and doing all-city driving. My 2019 Camry is still going strong with 94,800 miles and I drive somewhat like a maniac.

Toyota claims it has, but owners say otherwise.
Thank you for the responses. I think I will be able to adjust to the 8 speed automatic. In fact I was attracted to the Camry over the Accord because it doesn't have a CVT or Turbos, so I think in the long run it will likely be more reliable.
Thanks!
