I have a 2003 Kia Sedona 3.5 by with around 220,000 miles on it. I bought this van from a friend of mine a couple of months ago and it has a very loud whining noise coming from I think under the hood. Now this whining noise occurs after I have started the van and sometime has passed it does this when the car is in park when a car is changing from part to reverse to neutral to drive it doesn't in all gears. Now the person that I bought it from said that it wasn't making that noise until after he had had the brakes done. The noise also gets louder when the accelerator pedal is pushed (change in the RPMs) so any ideas on what this could be?
I think under the hood.
Don't be scared. Does it get louder when you open the hood?
Have a look at the noise topic in our FAQ

Since the brakes were just done maybe they left something loose. Kia recommends hanging the caliper by a wire while doing the brakes so you don't stress the brake line. Look under the wheel wells for something dangling.
Is the noise only when the car is moving or just with the engine running? Serpentine belt tensioners, bearing in the PS pump H2O pump and alternator could all be suspect. The serpentine belt itself could be worn.
220K is high mileage for a Kia. You running on borrowed time.
Another common cause of whining is lack of power steering fluid. Check the level in the reservoir and look for leaks. The fluid circulates from the PS pump to the PS rack to the PS reservoir and then back to the pump. Any thing in the loop that starves the PS pump will cause whining.
