Which Subaru Impreza is more reliable? The 3rd gen with the 4 speed auto or the 4th gen with the CVT? I know that the 4 speed auto has worse gas mileage than the CVT one, but which one is better? They both have all wheel drive standard.

3rd gen MPG: 20 city 26 highway

4th gen MPG: 27 city 35 highway

Definitely the normal automatic transmission is less problematic than the CVT.

Definitely the 4 speed automatic would last longer than the CVT, even though the 4 speed is made by Jatco.

Now, here is some math. According to the EPA, the 4th gen would save you $560 on gas annually compared to the 3rd gen.

If you say the CVT goes out after 8 years / 100k miles, thats more than $4000 saved in gas money, and around $4k-$7k in CVT replacement. Kind of neat if you ask me, it almost equals out.

But no seriously, talking reliability, 4 speed automatic with the naturally aspirated engine all day. Or just get a 4th gen with a manual.
