Hi Scotty.. I have a 91, V6 Cougar that has 69k original miles (yes I've known the car since it was new) in past five years I've had spark plugs, wires, distributor, belt, hoses, everything changed and have run cleaner through the air intake (that really works) she runs like a top! Just had the brake lines replaced so she stops!! So my question is.. should I have the trans fluid, or any other fluids (except coolant and oil) changed? I want to keep the old girl happy.. surprisingly, the only thing that doesn't work is the AC I don't really "need" it in Michigan.. to my knowledge the fluids and the fuel filter are 30 years old! Is there other stuff I should do?
DEFINITELY change the fuel filter. I can't believe it's still working. As far as trans fluid, you'll get 2 schools of thought on that one, the "leave it alone" group and the "maintain it" group. I fall under the keep the tranny serviced, however, flushing the old fluid out may expose some wear in the internals of the transmission, so be aware. You did your brakes, so you have new brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, so I say change it once in a long while in a sealed system. As far as how happy the overall operation is, go to an auto parts store and rent a code scanner. Many places will help you use it in the parking lot to retrieve codes, if any. This would better tell you if your car is actively upset about anything. Hope this helps!
