My 1992 Mazda Miata (manual trans, 176k miles) has recently started having battery problems. I was driving and about 20-30 minutes after I got on the road the stereo cut out and the "charge battery" light came on. On the drive home the light went off and on every few minutes, and the headlights got dimmer (high beams were about what the low beams usually are). I found that when the turn signal was on, the battery light flashed in time with the turn signal.
I think it may be an alternator issue but I'm not sure.
There’s an issue with the charging system. Definitely test the battery and alternator. Also, while you are in there perform the other low hanging fruit items like inspect battery terminals (securely clamped, no corrosion) and alternator belt.
