Scotty, I love you channel, thanks for this forum.
OK, I have a 1996 RAM 4x4 5.9L Magnum 180K miles, recently I was driving and the motor just cut off...initially I thought it was the fuel pump; I checked the fuel relay (clicked--good), checked the fuel rail--had fuel when I hit the bleeder---got under the truck and heard the pump prime when the key is on. I next checked all fuses---they are good. I thought the aftermarket alarm might be the issue, I checked all kill switches, alarm relays, etc...all good. I checked the coil--no spark; before I replaced the coil, I checked the coil plug connector with a volt meter and had no voltage. I scanned the vehicle and had 1 code---a tranny pressure control solenoid code P0748. Note: My RAM recently had a tranny rebuild.--I believe this was an uncleared code from the prior issue, however, once I got it out, the tranny failed and I went back for warranty...they rebuilt it again, all good, but when I got it back, the truck had a delayed crank/start...it used to fire immediately once the key turned, now (before the crank/no start issue) it takes like 4-6 seconds of cranking before it fires. The motor is smooth, just had a delayed start--not it just died while I was driving. No chug a chug (fuel issue) or rough idle (cam sensor issue). So I changed the crank shaft sensor (aftermarket, lifetime guarantee from Advanced Auto), and after i changed the crank position sensor, I now have a weak 2.6V to the coil itself, but not enough to crank the motor. I then rescanned it and now have a P1389 code which says "No Automatic Shutdown Relay Voltage at PCM". I checked the ASD relay--it clicks when the ignition is keyed; not wanting to cut corners, I bought a new relay--still no start. I checked the ASD relay fuse box terminals and it sends a signal, has voltage and doesn't appear to be the problem.
I have over $320 into this witch hunt for a ghost, and I can figure it out. I know i could change the cam sensor, but again, the engine didn't idle rough or having firing issues or related codes (I did change the cap, rotor, plugs and ignition cables over a year ago); I found a PCU online, used, in unknown condition for a 96 Ram 5.9 4x4...but I just don't know what to do?
Frustrated and scratching my head. Again, the truck used to fire perfectly, fast, immediately prior to getting the tranny done. The truck came out with a delayed start but continued to run for months...the tranny connects right at the bell housing, right where the crank position sensor is...so I thought for sure that would be it. Im now wondering if the aftermarket (non MoPar crank sensor might be the issue)...but remember, there was no crank position sensor code ever indicated...and the new P1389 code didnt show until after I changed the crank sensor.
What to do? Your thoughts, guidance and insights all welcomed and truly appreciated...and from anyone else on your form. You rock Scotty! {black}:excitement:
The RAM is a automatic transmission--with a stick on the floor to shift from 2H, 4H, N, 4L when you want to go into 4x4.
Bad alternator? Have it load tested.
I checked the battery; health is good--my volt gauge shows the voltage is in the proper range, and this wouldn't be possible if the alternator was bad, I would have had dim lights and a dead battery. The vehicle continues to crank and crank despite repeated attempts to get it going due to the crank.no spark. I appreciate your answer, am I possibly missing something even though the battery has ample volts to crank the motor repeatedly?
