If a transmission after 30 minutes of driving starts shifting hard and the fluid level is perfect what could be wrong with it ? It shifts perfectly the first thirty minutes of driving but after getting off the highway and sitting in traffic it starts with the hard shifts especially when going from park to drive. It has vibration in drive more noticeable at a red light sitting still after 30 min as well. Any clues Scotty ? Thanks always
what could be wrong with it ? I
It could be wearing out after nearly 28 years of service. How often has the trans been serviced over the last few decades?
@chucktobias I changed the fluid last year and did it three times to make sure I got all the old fluid out as I could but it dose have 285,000 miles original transmission
@chaseg How long did it go before that without being serviced? At that age and mileage, a worn transmission is the most likely reason for the issues. However you would need a transmission expert using a fancy scan tool to confirm that.
@chucktobias I changed all the fluids including the transmission when I first purchased it at 197,xxx miles I also installed a new idle control valve and thermostat and timing chain kit new belts and alternator and fuel filter all at the same time when first purchased….
@chaseg That's all well and good but the die was cast in the first 197,xxx miles prior to your purchase. Also, being decades old the car is beyond its expected service life. At this point any more you can get out of it is gravy.
@chucktobias right on thank you for your time an response I feel the same I’ll drive it till it finally quits I do have a spare motor and trans for it so I was just curious as to what could be failing in the transmission as I do have all new motor/trans mounts so I was wondering what else could be making it shake at idle in drive…..

This is where mileage works wonders for knowing the transmission's overall condition.

Your torque converter is wearing out.
@justin-shepherd yea I forgot to add that to the post sorry 285,xxx thousand miles, original transmission I bought it at 198,xxx thousand miles
