97 mercury villager Ac not working, replace the brain?

Hello, 1997 Mercury Villager AC stopped working. (It works VERY sporadically, completely unpredictable and not for long when it does work.)

Its full of freon so its not that.

Mechanic checked fuses and relays and said theres no power to the compressor. The clutch doesnt come on. He said to get a replacement ECU.

Where is the ECU located? No you tube videos or google info on its location, even the Haynes manual doesnt mention anything about it.

  • Thanks kindly for any info!

Just want to say for anyone else that needs this info that the "brain" for this particular vehicle is a PCM/Powertrain control module and is located behind the glove box..it actually is mentioned in the Haynes manual and probably chiltons, just make sure you look for powertrain control module as its not listed under ECM or ECU or anything else.

All right, the ECU is the main computer of the car. I hope that guy knows what he's talking about because they are not cheap then they have to be reprogrammed to work on your car. It's a pretty expensive endeavor. You can't just buy one and plug it in because it won't work and the car won't even start. I would get a second opinion first if I were you

Hi scotty, thanks for your response. Yea we  noticed it can be pricey as well as it needing to be reprogrammed. A 2nd opinion is a good idea.

Do you happen to know the location of the EVU on this vehicle? We havent been able to locate it yet.

Thanks kindly!

You can find a shop manual for that vehicle at charm.li which may help. However I would expect the repair to cost quite a bit more than a 27-year-old Ford/Mercury minivan is worth.
