Hello Scotty.
i just bought a 99 camry, automatic , 238k miles, after driving it a few days i got a check engine light. code was p0441 (evap) and p1780 (shift position)
the owner before me had LED lights and it was disconnected, so i connected the plug. do you think thats what made the check engine light go off?
i disconnected it and the check engine light hasn't came back on. (going on 4 days now )
Maybe, since the check engine light hasn't come on. But, if you have a scan tool such as the Blue Driver, you might be able to do a bit of enhanced diagnostics and live data scanning. For example, you could scan for Short Term and Long Term Fuel Trim. If the car has a high plus fuel trim (particularly over 10 percent, long-term), you might have an evap leak. What could cause an evap leak? One thing that can cause an evap code is an old gas cap. If the cap has not been changed in 22 years, that's a real possibility.
As for the P1780, reconnecting the LED light might have restored an electrical ground, in the system.

More generally: Here's the thing: You might not have a check engine light on, but there still could be some issues that fall just below the threshold for a check engine light. Scanning and finding them now, and dealing with them now (often involving minor maintenance) might save you money and headaches, later.
you're awesome, i will check that soon as possible and i will get back to you =)
Use an OEM replacement on the cap. The Chinesium aftermarket caps are junk, and don't seal the gas tank correctly.
No, headlights wouldn't cause those codes. Please provide the WHOLE diagnostic result. Not just 1 or 2 words.
ok, so i got my bluedriver, i plugged it in, and the trims seem fine, short and long were in range at normal temperature at idle.
the voltage on sensor 2 was jumping around everywhere, no stability or rhythm whatsoever. is that normal?
Great! Once you become familiar with what the codes and data mean, you can monitor the health of your vehicle for yourself. It makes conversations with mechanics much more meaningful. As for the sensor voltage jump, that could be either a bad sensor, a loose wire, or something in between the sensor and the ECM. This is where you bring a diagnostician in, to do a bit of detective work, before swapping out parts. Mountainmanjoe is right, though. Headlights would not create these codes. I still suspect an issue with a wire break or relay, but it takes a bit of hands on testing to check out those hypotheses, to confirm or disconfirm these possibilities.
thanks for the help guys, i really do love you guys for the help.
ok so i fixed the p1780 code, it was a split wire in the trunk taillights harness or trunk harness.
i reset codes, the p0441 came back, evap system incorrect purge flow.
so i just bought another new cap, (this time from dealer).. crossing my fingers...
didnt work 😭
p0441 evap system incorrect purge flow
is still my error =(
i bought second gas cap . this time from dealer . reset code. just came back.
blue driver says replace evap
canister or canister solenoid
plz help
Perhaps this is a bit obvious, so please bear with me. Did you erase the codes, and then see if it popped back up?
If you did erase the codes, and it came back up, then have the solenoid tested, as well as any connectors or wires. If there's power and ground for both, then it has to be the canister.
