[Solved] 99 Expedition transmission problems

99 Expedition 5.4

Transmission seems to be acting up and throwing codes.
Long story short. Notice the Overdrive light OFF light was flashing while driving. Didn’t really notice any problems. I have a Bluetooth scanner. The codes seem to change. One time it was P0782. I checked the fluid and felt the need to add just a small amount. Erased the codes. I either did good for a while, or after I pulled my 6.5 by 14 foot open utility trailer. I pulled it some distance. Loaded it with 1,200 pounds. Emptied a good distance later. Half way back the house. The light started flashing again. Added more fluid. Erased the code. A short time later, it began to really act up. Like in a manual when the clutch isn’t all the way out. Oh the codes did switch up from P0782, P0783, and then P0781. One of those times it could have been 2 codes.

Thank you for reading, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mileage? Has the transmission been serviced regularly over the last 26 years? It's possible the transmission is just wearing out.

You can find causes and troubleshooting information for that code in the link below:

P0781 and P0783 are basically the same type of problem, but at different gear changes.

@chucktobias mileage is 218,468. It was just bought last year and I’m not 100% sure on its history.
The first 99 Expedition I had never ever gave me a transmission hiccup. However the engine failed.

At that age and mileage the trans could definitely be wearing out, especially if not maintained. (Is fluid level OK? What is the condition of the fluid?)

Other than following the troubleshooting steps outlined in the link provided, you would need a good transmission specialist to diagnose what's going on with the transmission internally.

@chucktobias as I mentioned. The fluid was a tad low in my opinion. As far as the condition I’m not sure. It’s red! Maybe the slightest darkness.
