have a 1998 subaru forester. it runs great but the a/t oil temp light is always on. car has 185,000 miles. at first it would go of after awhile but now it is on all the time. tranny shifts  fine and fluid is correct color and not burned. my mechanic say i should live with it and Subaru dealer says the same thing because  it might take two hours just to diagnose. Been like this for a few months and does not seem to be causing any damage. Just that the light continually flashing is annoying and i would like to turn it off.  Any help would be appreciated.

You can do a check by your self, just to make sure.

Firstly, Warm up the engine

Then Turn the ignition switch OFF

Next  Turn the ignition switch ON

Start the engine ,

Then Drive the vehicle at speeds greater than 12 Mph - meaning just take it for a short spin, doesn't need to be far or fast, just above 12 MPH for a period of time.

Stop the vehicle,

Next Press the brake pedal and move the gear selector to "1"

Turn the ignition switch to OFF

Turn the ignition switch to ON

Move the gear selector to "2"

Move the gear selector to "1"

Move the gear selector to "2"

Move the gear selector to "3"

Move the gear selector to "D"

At this point you should get the flashing light.

If the light flashes :

At a two flashes/per second = that indicates there are no stored codes.

Faster/more rapidly at a 4 flashes/per second = that indicates a power supply problem to the transmission.

With long and short flashes = that indicates there are stored codes - the long flashes representing “10”s  and the short flashes “1”s

example: ONE long flash, followed by 5 short flashes would indicate NR 15 - Shift solenoid A. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit

Below there is a list with corresponding error codes:

  • 11 Line pressure duty solenoid. Short or Disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 12 Lockup duty solenoid. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 13 2-4 brake timing solenoid. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 14 Shift solenoid B. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 15 Shift solenoid A. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 16 2-4 brake duty solenoid. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 21 ATF temperature sensor. Short or disconnection in input circuit
  • 22 Pressure sensor. Short or disconnection in input circuit
  • 23 Engine speed signal. No signal input above 10km/h
  • 24 Transfer duty solenoid. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit
  • 25 Engine torque control signal. Short or disconnection in engine torque control signal circuit
  • 31 Throttle sensor. Short or disconnection in input circuit
  • 32 Vehicle speed sensor 1. No signal input to speed sensor 1 above 20km/h
  • 33 Vehicle speed sensor 2. No signal input to speed Sensor 2 above 20km/h
  • 34 Turbine sensor. No signal input in ranges other than N range
  • 36 Low clutch timing solenoid. Short or disconnection in solenoid driving circuit

@mascot15
Excellent write up. He may also want to google the trans service manual so he can make a resistance measurement on the temp sensor inside the trans. The trans service manual should have the pinout and value of temp sensor (check cold usually).

Thanks. That's a good tip, for sure.

I did this and it worked great.  showed 2 long and 3 quick flashes.  I'm thinking 23 which is engine speed signal.  No signal input above 10km/h  .   What does that mean though ?
