Scotty,
I'm the second owner of a 2005 Pontiac GTO, 6.0 / 6 speed manual tranny with 64,500 miles on it. All maint records up to date and drives beautifully. At my last oil change, my mechanic said I have some oil dripping / sweating around the rear main seal. My question is this: should I be immediately concerned about this? I saw one drop of oil on my garage floor but nothing significant. Can these seals blow out while driving or will it be a slow steady decline of the seal? Interested in your thoughts. Thanks, Chris
I've had a few of the LS1/LS2 Goats. The rear main seals do tend to leak and it is best to just go ahead and take care of it. After all, if you are seeing oil on the ground, you don't want to spot up your garage floor/driveway.
@mod_man
Thanks - that' s kind of what I was thinking but wasn't 100% sure. Crazy how much a $45 seal costs to replace! Chris
Seems like a good idea to change the seal, especially on a big 6.0L engine like this. Since it drives like a dream, I assume you want to keep the car for some more time. It may drip a bit or it may start flushing out oil at some point... Better safe than sorry.
You could try the seal additive that Scotty recommends. But if this is your daily driver and you love the car then you would feel better having it replaced. You may consider a replacement clutch kit while they are in there with the trani dropped. Then your good for another 100k at least. Great car.
