Is GMs AFM and Chryslers MDS actually better than what is said? I know it’s by stretch of means amazing. People always say it’s horrible don’t mess with that kind of stuff, but I see vehicles with those systems run for 250k miles and still go strong. Or am I just crazy?

sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Are you a gambling man?

Even without cylinder deactivation, these vehicles are rolling piles of junk.

You can't change the laws of physics. At a minimum, if an engine is subject to uneven thermal expansion and contraction cycles it's going to experience accelerated wear. That's without even getting into the added complexity and mechanical issues that can arise due to poor design as well as normal wear and tear. What you get for all that complexity and reduced engine life is a few mpg savings, if the stupid thing is working perfectly. "Amazing" - right.

If an engine with cylinder deactivation manages to last 250K miles chances are it would have lasted 400-500K miles without it.

My 2007 AFM still works after 190k. I guess if you change the oil regularly it will last.

But I still disabled mine via tuner.
