Hello!
The vehicle that has captured my attention is a white 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX. It has a standard transmission, around 126K miles, all-wheel drive, and over 300 HP! Test-driving it was an exhilarating experience.
However, the car is fitted with a 3" cat-less Invidia exhaust. It's been professionally tuned. But it is LOUD. Too loud for me and my neighbors as well! In addition, I'm concerned about the unpleasant fumes it produces, and wondering if I would have problems passing emissions tests.
My question is ... would it be possible to make modifications to this downpipe (or is it even wise to do so)? I know a muffler can be installed, but would that make a significant difference to the volume level? Can/should a resonator and a cat be welded in as well to potentially remedy these problems?
And even if these changes were possible, would they be beneficial? Wouldn't these counteract the benefits of having a turbocharged engine by inhibiting the flow of exhaust, and/or putting a strain on the device itself?
This may not go over well, but would the best remedy be to restore the car back to its original stock exhaust components?
Any insights would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
Back to stock is the way to go. Those down pipes often cause issues with emissions. I do not understand why so many people delete their catalytic converters as their first modification. "It AdDs TeH HoRzEPoWeRz!" Not true at all, scientifically proven false, and it causes all kinds of headaches.
Anyway, if you can find the stock pieces I'd go back with that and you'll have a lot less headaches.
Yes, just go back to stock & all your problems should theoretically go away.
That sounds like a fun ride. Nice. Great about considering your neighbors, very nice, can the loudness be managed by driving slow/respectful around the neighborhood? Since it is too loud, then, why, still, thinking about it? Reads like it is a sticking point and move on (easy for me to say). Yes, it would fail emissions and without a converter, legal issue that may become significant issue. Smelling fumes on the test drive, that is not nice and will get old fast. Making changes to bring back the modified car to stock may fix issues, but then why buy the modified car in the first place? How about buying a stock WRX and then not needing to mess with things. Also, buying a modified car may bring different kinds of headaches and while it will it be a great learning experience, is learning about engine mods/parts interaction first hand interesting? I have a feeling the asking price is significant and the previous driver put the engine to its limits, so may be buying lots of headaches. I totally brought the downer, but with the money that is going to spent for purchase, changing to stock, how about putting that as a down payment for a new WRX?
