Hi Scotty,
What is your professional opinion on aftermarket sunroofs?
I'm about to take delivery of a brand new 2020 Toyota Tacoma. I had the choice between a regular TRD Off Road and the TRD Off Road Premium, which for an extra $3000 would have got me a sunroof, leather interior etc. I ended up going with the regular TRD Off Road because it was in the color I really wanted, and the payments will be more affordable. My previous vehicle was a 2014 Honda Civic, which had a sunroof, and I used it all the time. I'm going to miss having that feature, but I know I can live without it.
I suspect an aftermarket sunroof would severely degrade the Tacoma's awesome resale value, but I don't plan on selling the truck. If there's a company out there that makes high quality sunroofs that last the lifetime of the vehicle, and with an installer to match, I would consider it for a future upgrade. I live in Toronto Canada, so the winters here are also something I have to keep in mind. Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it!
Cheers,
Steve.
BAD!
$3000 for the factory included sunroof, which includes a warranty for any leaks and malfunctions...
... or X amount under $3000 for an aftermarket sunroof with a conditional warranty that may lead to additional headaches if any issues arise.
VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY BAD IDEA!
Hey Udyr. Nice to see you again.
I would forget about it. OEM sunroofs in general already can have issues over time, but an aftermarket one (while in theory they should strengthen the weak points of OEM) is still a little dicey, especially if there is not a market for it for that particular vehicle - meaning the aftermarket company does not have as much test data on how it holds up over time. Anyhow, live with what you got and be glad it’s one less thing (or two) that can go wrong.
My neighbor put a sunroof into his existing station wagon. It did not work out so well, he cannot drive the car in the rain any longer
Shocking!!!
VERY, VERY BAD!
VERY, VERY, VERY BAD!
Unless you like having a waterfall in your car, don't even consider it.
It doesn't matter whether its a Toyota sun roof, an after market sun roof or a Velux roof window, they're all going to leak eventually.
Wow 🤣 well, now I know lol. Thanks for all the feedback!
