  • Hi Scotty,
  • Still trying with the inherrited GX 150K miles.  The air conditioning doesn't work.
  •
  • A mechanic puts something into my 2001 Taurus (60K miles) that he says takes a very expensive machine.  It works great for the summer.  He charges me $90 for the 5 minute job.  Saw another video and think maybe he's robbing me but at least I get air for about 40 cents a day.

  •     Now, the question - the Lexus does the same thing.  Blows air but it's not cold.  Heat works fine. Any chance there's something for the Lexus that's like my Ford's solution?  I saw your video about coolent and air conditioning and before I'd pay him what he'd want for the job (assuming he'd know how to do it) I'll open the windows or just take the Taurus when it's hot.  Still, driving the Lexus is such a pleasure, I'd love for it to have air.
  • Thanks,

He probably put in some stop leak and freon. Which only works on very small leaks. It needs to be diagnosed, the leak found, evacuated and charged properly. Also as old as it is you should plan on at least swapping the accumulator. It helps remove humidity from the system.

Thanks, Trump. Ok, now I know what an accumulator does. Uh, what's an accumulator and how much of a job is it to swap it?
I bought the car new in 2001. 2015 was a jinx year for it. Started when I had to replace the transmission..
A friend who owns a body shop noticed rust on the rocket panels and thought he owed me a favor. He cut out all the rust and replaced with titanium steel. By all the rust, I mean rails, floor boards, r I clear panels - pretty much everything bel I w the door handles. I had it detailed by a Ford dealer and the car looked brand new. Had ut two days and parked in friend's driveway. His friend accidently backed his huge truck over it and took out the hood and headlights. Back to body shop and his insurance paid $2200.
Shortly after, on the expressway some tow truck lost its
Winch which appeared in my lane abd there was no way to avoid it. Best i could I d do was drive over it and pray the car was high enough to clear I to. No luck. It bounced loudly three times abd someone in the last n e next to ne yelled I was leaking gas. O pulled over abd a full tank if gas spilled out all over the highway. Has m at, fire, police, tis company a b d a ride home. {black}
They towed it to a dealer and they gave my insurance company an estimate of $6000 to replace gas tank, drive train, struts, oil psn, transmission, exhaust system, and more. Insurance totaled the car. I had the mechanic walk me under the car and explain each item on the quote. New transmission was to be replaced with a used one because the skirt holding the fluid was damaged and there was a hairline crack in the aluminum housing at the top and they didn't have a tig
welde. My neighbor is a welder so replace the skirt and leave my new transmission alone. I took a lot of pictures and s video of the walk through and ended up with an estimate of $2000.. Ended up only being $1100. My insurance wouldn't have totaled the car in the first place if they'd bern honest. Insurance paid me $5K for the car and and sold it back to me for $2K. So I let them fix it and immediately drove it to my transmission guy to check their work . Hood thing because the fill hose on the gas tank was twisted and gas would not have gone into the tank. And the tank was only on with a single bolt and it wasn't even tightened! I made the dealership tow it back to them. So, even though the calendar says the car is 20 years old, it's pretty much a hand built cat and only 6 years old with 70K miles. Finally in that same year, onvyhat same driveway, the owner of the GX470 that i inherrited forgot my car was there and backed into it taking our tge two passenger doors and mirror and rail light and trunk lid. Back to the body shop for the final time. By the way, the Lexus did all that damage to my car and only suffered a single dent on the upper rear corner.
So, the car looks new and runs great and thanks to insurance companies it's had a lot of money poured into it, I'm loath to put any more in. So, again, about how much will an accumulator cost?
Hope you got some laughs from this saga. {pear}:veryhungry:

On average they’re not bad, part for the taurus probably 50-75 bucks. About 100-125 for the Lexus. But you still have an issue of a leak it sounds like on both. You need someone to use dye, or a freon sniffer to find the leak. Sometimes its just a o ring seal. About a dollar. On your taurus as many times as it’s been hit in the front it’s probably your condenser coil(radiator for ac, sits in front regular radiator) or the o-rings on it. They run 150-200 usually. Once the leak is fixed, new accumulator installed then it can have a vacuum pulled on it and charged. Either way at an AC shop plan on an hours labor. Two hours max if condenser needs replaced. And then whatever it costs for them to evac and charge. Usually around 100-125 most places.
