Hello.

I've been driving a 2007 Kia Picanto since January as my daily driver. I'm 19 years old and this is my first car.

Today I finally got my car back from the repair shop (It had been there for a week because the mechanic couldn't figure out what was wrong with it)

When I was buying the car, I thought it would be very reliable and expected it to last ( I thought I was getting a good deal, it had only 59 000 original  kilometres on it.)

However, I ended up hating the car. It caused me many problems during my 11 months of ownership. Collectively, I have invested a total of nearly a 1000 euros in repairs.

The fuel pump went out, the engine had a failure, the check engine light came on, I got stuck inside several times because the locks ceased to work, it broke down on the highway, couldn't accelerate and the transmission is on its way out.

I am really desperate. Two weeks ago, while I was driving home, the car jerked on the highway at higher rpms, became uncontrollable. I made it to town, luckily, with no gear in place (just quick shifting, then suddenly neutral). Then the car died. I managed to start it and drove home in first gear because I couldn't go faster.

My mechanic advised me to sell the car ASAP. He told me it was really difficult to determine the issue with the car and what he found out is that the car has a manufacturing fault concerning the engine which means it is impossible to say how long the engine is going to last before I have to pour money into the car again in order to keep it going.

What is your opinion? Should I get rid of it?

What car should I buy, up to 3000 € in price, that is well-built and does not require constant maintenance? I really want a dependable vehicle. I am desperate and I don't want to spend money on repairs.

Thanks.

First off, sorry to hear, newer Kia's past 2012 are the better options, older ones tend to fall apart regardless of miles. On a 3k euro budget you can go for an older honda or toyota, the milage will be high most likely but if you get it checked out by a mechanic and everything is sound, bonus if the previous owner kept his paperwork, then the engines are bulletproof with routine maintenance. With the way cars are it is also that repairs are a necessity, you can't expect something daily driven to not ever have to change it's brakes or tires right? It's just that repairs will be lesser with said more reliable vehicle.

@bruceree
I would not rely on papers.

Why not? Out of curiosity.
