Should you buy 4 new tires or just 1 in an AWD vehicle?

I was told on a car with all wheel drive you could not buy just one new tire. You had to buy all four because it would hurt the drivetrain.

@dino
THAT IS CORRECT, you must replace all 4 tires because the tires are shock absorvers. if they are not equal, your engine will be exposed to alot more road vibration, and that can damage your engine/drivetrain more quickly. scotty has a youtube video of that. try to buy ONLY NEW TIRES, but make sure you have correct wheel size to get correct tire size

@dino
when you post a question it asks you for your vehicle year make and model. This is important information if you want an accurate answer. The only answer I can provide now is "it depends".

@dino
I would air on the side of caution and buy all 4 because thats whats recommended some people never have a issue just buying one but if its not a old junker just buy all 4

Even for 2WD cars you have to buy in at least in pair.

The AWD generally activate when the system detects a difference in speed between the tires.

So, if you install one new tire, and its diameter is larger or smaller than the others,

the system may activate, believing there is a tire slipping.

I have added one new tire to an old Honda CRV without issue, but it was the identical brand and size of tire.

Yes, unless you can disengage the 4-wheel-drive system all the tires need to be very closely matched in diameter.

It is possible to have a new tire shaved down to match the others. It's a judgment call as to whether doing that or replacing all 4 tires is the better way to go.
