Hello Scotty and everyone. Ive had an idea that seems pretty good and I wanted to run it by some experts before I act upon it. There are a lot of old beater bmw’s in my area. And we all know that bmw’s are already dying when they come out of the factory so the old ones are probably about to break down any moment. In my town there is no bmw dealer within 25 miles so service is difficult to attain for these cars as they require “special” care to say the least lol. Since I am fresh out of high school, I am considering getting a job as a Bmw technician, and working there until I get my “master technician certification”. After that, which will take many years, I could open up a bmw shop in my town. I will have my certification to work on bmw’s, and I can undercut the dealerships ridiculous repair prices. Also, I would tell my customers nothing but the truth. So, I think being an honest mechanic who’s close to home and charges fair prices would draw a lot of customers. It makes me sick to think how those dealerships take advantage of their own brand’s unreliability just to make even more money. I would also work on other brands but beamers would be the focus. What do you all think?
I’ve taken my BMW to 3 different places besides the the dealership.
1) One guy is a BMW Tech that moonlights fixing BMWs at his home garage. Undercuts the dealer significantly.
2) Another guy I take my car to opened up his own brick and mortar shop specializing in BMW/mini. He starred as a BMW tech but went off on his own.
3) I don’t know the background of the guy, but their shop does all Euro brands. Seems to be the go to spot in the area for BMW’s. Seems like 80% of the cars in the shop are BMW.
I think you have some potential in what you want to do. BMWs are a pain in the ass to work on, with that pain in the ass comes $$$. All the guys I worked with above are honest mechanics, but still save me so much more than taking it to the dealer. And it seems they are doing pretty well for themselves.
Sounds very similar to my story. I hated how dealers were overcharging their customers for vehicles, so I opened my own shop and sell cars to customers for fair prices.
It sounds like you know what you want to do and what the path is to get there. I say go for it if it is something you are truly passionate about. There is always money in knowing how to fix broken items.
Good luck with your venture!
