[Solved] Is BlueDriver worth the hype?

I’ve been so tempted to buy the blue driver scan tool for 2 years now.

Is it worth the hype?

I would use it for basic uses. No major repairs for sure. I would also use it when it’s time to buy another car (used)

Yes it is and worth every penny for what it does. Get it.

What are you trying to do with the scan tool? You need to figure that out first.  Otherwise, for most people, a basic scan tool is all they need, and for that the Bluedriver is excellent (and works with your smart phone).  It is about $100, and the dongle is small enough to take with you on trips.  I would buy direct from Bluedriver to make sure you are getting the latest firmware and not getting scammed (e.g. clones, etc).

Also, see here for vehicle coverage:  scroll down to “Will Bluedriver work with my vehicle?”

FWIW, … here is the latest on BlueDriver from odbadvisor:

What are you planning on using it for?

It's a great tool for basic diagnostics, including reading ABS and SRS codes (if your vehicle is supported).

If you plan on fixing the problems yourself then it's a good tool.

Have you used it to read abs/srs codes yourself? I didn’t think it could do that.

Yes I have on a 2005 Corolla I used to have. It read the SRS codes fine

Yeah it read Bxxxx & Cxxxx stored codes, in mine too.. Never knew they even existed until I got the BlueDriver.. They haven’t come back since I cleared them.

ok I'm impressed. That is terrific value for money.

I was researching the subject as well and found out that the BlueDriver only works with its proprietary software, does not work with Torque and all the other apps available for android. Is this the case ? If it is I would not buy it

why not? If the software is included with the device, and it works well, then I don't see the problem.

I haven’t had an issue with the BlueDriver app. See moderator Figmund Sreud’s attached link above.

@MountainManJoe

Well you are limited to ONLY one app the original one. There are tons of good apps for OBDII that do a lot of stuff like display virtual instruments etc etc. Some may work even better than the default app and have more features.

Plus what will happen if the app stops being supported and updated. You are better off with something that is widely compatible.

I think for most people, the one app will do everything they need, especially if it's made well. And judging by the ratings, it is very good. I has a packed feature set, including virtual instruments. I think because this tool is in the $100 range (not free or $5 like the other apps), the developers can afford to make nice software and then support it well.

Who cares if they stop updating it, if it works well from the get-go.

@MountainManJoe IF they stop updating/supporting the app they can make it stop working or display ads or introduce pay walls for some feature.

I have seen this happen before, you get an app it works great it stays free for a 1-2 years to lure people in and then they introduce charges to use it.

You may have a free app now but they can change that remotely

It's not a free app. It's $100
It doesn't need ads. You already paid for it.
