Brake and Hub Service

I had my car inspected and my mechanic recommended to have my brakes and hubs serviced. The quote was $210 for all four. Is servicing your brakes basically just adding lubricant to caliper pins, removing dust and applying brake cleaner? & for hub service do you just get a resurface tool & brush to remove the rust? Wondering if I should do it myself.

I have a 2005 Pontiac Vibe

I have never done or had a "Brake and Hub Service". If everything works I don't touch it. But if you live in the rust belt, then maybe this is something people do. If you know what you're doing and have changed brake linings/rotors before, then this should be an easy job. Then again, $210 isn't bad if you're too busy.

Might be a matter of cleaning and lubricating sliding surfaces on calipers and/or brake shoes, something that is frequently neglected. This would be needed more in the rust belt. It's something easily done by the shadetree mechanic but for a couple of hundred bucks if money isn't tight might be worth paying someone else to do it.

Thanks. I checked the front ones and ended up cleaning the slides and lubricating the pins. I looked at the hubs and they have a decent amount of rust. Is it okay to smooth the hubs if I’m not replacing the rotors?

Smooth the hubs? You mean clean the surface where it makes contact with the rotor?
Sure.

Why didn't you ask your mechanic what is done during a "brake and hub service?"  I've never heard of it.
