Brown coolant under radiator cap

Hi Scotty,

I took the radiator cap off to check the coolant in my 2015 Sienna with 115k miles and it's a light brown color. I've heard that can be normal in cold temperatures and if you take short trips and i am in Wisconsin. I change the oil and filter religiously every 5k miles myself but have never touched the coolant since we bought it with 93k miles. The coolant in the overflow is all pink. Should I be worried and take it to a mechanic?

Thank you

No. That's the oil cap, not radiator.

well you just need to read the label on the antifreeze bottle. It's good for at most 5 years.

You are waaay overdue for a change then, and now it's starting to rust. You can expect water pump failure soon as well.

Not to mention it may not have enough anti-freeze. Testers only cost around $10.

The brown colored water is rust. This often happens to cars, especially to ones where the cooling system hasn't been serviced. Without any knowledge of whether the coolant has ever been changed, it's best you change the coolant now.
