- Hi Scotty, my 2014 Toyota Matrix with 72k miles on it has a burning smell when I put it in lower gears when trying to pass someone in the highway. Car has automatic transmission. Trying to accelerate from 80kmh to 100kmh at rpm more than 4k but less than 6k so not close to the red line. I can smell it from inside the cabin even though ac is in recirculation. The smell is temporary and goes away after a minute. Don’t smell it during normal driving. Is this ok?

Maybe you are leaking some oil onto the exhaust manifold from the valve cover.

Check the valve cover gasket. You may have some small leak there.
