My 2001 Corolla uses Dexron II or III. I was wondering if using Dexron VI in a fluid CHANGE is perfectly safe or not. I'm unsure if i can mix the VI with whatever (II or III) original fluid is already in the transmission. I was considering using a simple Fram ATF but i hear Valvoline Max Life is great.
I use Dex/Merc (Dexron III) for transmissions that take either Dexron II or III. No problems. Valvoline is excellent but Wal-Mart SuperTech is fine as well. (Though last time I was at Wally World the Valvoline was actually a little cheaper.)

Thanks for the response. How long have your transmissions been running fine on Dex/merc and what vehicles are they?
I've been using Dex/Merc in my vehicles that call for Dexron II or III for decades.
Dex/Merc it is then! Thanks!
Stick with what your vehicles manual says.
Thanks for replying. I was going to until i discovered dexron II and III aren't made anymore but there are multivehicle atfs that can sub for it but apparently so can dex 6 so thats my dilemma.
The problem with multi-vehicle fluid is that it's a "one size fits all" situation where it really is not quite right for any specific application but you can get away with using it - long term effects unknown. Dexron II and III are no longer licensed by GM but manufacturers such as Valvoline are still producing Dexron III (Dex/Merc) formulations.
Based on both the answers in this thread sounds like dex/merc it is! Thank you
