I live in Pennsylvania, so I am worried about looking to buy a car from here due to rust. Is it better to look for cars online from the south? The only concern would be that I would not be able to inspect them mechanically. How should one go about buying a car from far away in regards to getting them inspected and making sure they run?
If you want to do that you should familiarize yourself with the cost of importing the car and all of the red tape associated with doing so. You might want to see if you can find any cars in your area in good shape. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada sonI am right in the rust belt and I have bought all of my cars locally. I would think that if I can find decent cars here that you would be able to in Pennsylvania.
I would add to @JohnnyETX's comment. If you do look down south...I would avoid vehicles that live(d) in any costal areas. The salt from the sea mist and salt in the air can also cause rust problems on vehicles too.
Hmmm go on craigs list somewhere warm and dry. keep tabs on what you find. take some vacation time and go check them out.
I've read in car forums that I take part in, that there are pre-car buying inspection services out there where you can have a vehicle mechanically inspected and you get a detailed report all the aspects of the potential car, and be able to make a decision one way or the other. May be something you could look into. I've never done it, but peeps in the car forums have.
Watch out from buying cars in places like Houston, east Texas, Louisiana, any place near bayous. We got floods down here and sitting water so still check for rust even though we don’t get snow
