Scotty, my wife and I pre-ordered a new Prius this fall. Long wait, backup, supply chain, etc., we're finally getting it just before the New Year. This will primarily be wife's car and, for what we need it for, it'll be great. I already know to turn down the extended warranty--Toyota refines their cars until they're as good as can be, and they've been at the Prius for a long while. Given the horror stories I've heard about dealers these days, any other advice for me or anyone else (dumb enough--ha!) to buy a new car these days? (We're trading in a 2010 Carolla with 200,000 miles for $3k.)
This applies only if you plan on paying the full price cash. But if this is your plan then don't tell them anything until you go through the F&I office and give them time to play whatever games they want and then at the end say you're paying it in full. The reason for this is from personal experience that because dealerships make most of their profit at the F&I office and especially when you finance with them sometimes they give you a different price based on if paying cash or financing through them. You can even tell them you'll consider financing through them based on what they have to offer to make their appetite wet.
exactly!
They are going to try and upsell you on stuff you don’t need. Don’t fall for it.
They are going to try to ask you for how much you are willing to pay monthly. Don’t tell them. Work the sale price first.
This advice comes too late for you but I would never buy a new car and never buy any car from a dealer.
