Hiya Scotty! Longtime fan here, been watching you for over 10 years. Thank you for all you do!
My 1995 Camry with 148k miles started having the ODO light flashing and seemed to be slightly hesitant getting into and out of gear 2. Had a prior oil leak with no (real) problems but then I drove the car across multiple states bc I was moving around for work and that's when the ODO light started flashing. Sometimes the flashing stops especially during city driving.
The dealer says my distributor o ring and valve cover gasket are leaking oil onto my solenoids causing solenoid codes and that my actual transmission is fine. But they say they don't change solenoids and that if I go through them, I'll have to change the entire transmission. My transmission fluid has been changed during service intervals and I change the oil regularly. They never gave me in writing that my solenoids have oil leaking onto them or the actual codes themselves.
Do you think it's worth getting the valve cover gasket and distributor o ring changed first then the solenoids?
Can I cause long term engine or transmission damage if I just drive it the way it is?
Another example of why we recommend that people not take their cars to dealers for out-of-warranty service and repairs. Best to find a good independent mechanic. (Stay away from chain shops like Firestone, AAMCO, Pep Boys, etc.)
Well I would fix the oil leak and really let's see what happens. If it's still acts up, find a mechanic that will change the solenoids. I can't believe they don't change them at the dealer. That's ridiculous. They're supposed to repair their own cars
