Can we trust Teslas?

Tesla has been out since 2003 with the Roadster, but it wasn’t till like 2012 or 2013 when the Model S became available. Despite being out since 03, they still have build quality problems. If you were looking for an EV, do you trust Teslas in the long run even if their quality is so poor?

No, I wouldn't trust them for being reliable long-term transportation.

No. Reputable car manufacturers are making electronic cars and I personally trust car companies more than Tesla.

I do not trust their EVs for durability.  The same goes for the other automakers.  It’s wise to only lease EVs at this point regardless of which automaker makes it.

No, not when they do NOT make repair data and schematics available, for third party repairs. There's little transparency around their product.  Elon Musk is brilliant, yes, but also not an admirable or particularly trustworthy human being, IMHO.

Besides, these vehicles are too expensive, too complex, and not at all what DIY is all about. I don't want to be left at the mercy of Tesla. It seems to me that Tesla's ethos, as closed source as it is, constitutes something that is the very opposite of what the DIY spirit is about.

Indeed. I would also add that I would not trust ANY vehicle that remains so firmly under the manufacturer's control after purchase that they can unilaterally update and change features and capabilities on the fly over the air. Just whose car is it, anyway?

Don’t they have pretty bad resale values? Honestly if I found one cheap enough I might buy one for my wife but I definitely wouldn’t pay full price

I wouldn't touch them with a 50 foot pole. If you want an electric car your best bet is probably a Nissan Leaf.

I would not trust them. They have poor quality ratings. I don't get how the owners love them so much.

These are the same owners who put autopilot on and crash into police cars because they aren't paying attention.

I’ve never seen one in person but supposedly the interior is real nice, plus for some people it’s a status symbol I guess. For the money though I’d rather go Lexus if I wanted a car like that

I'll be honest. I tend to like a flashier car, and if I were to own an EV today it would be a Tesla.

That said, I'm not an Elon fan and no, I don't trust Tesla. I don't trust ANY automaker to be honest and always go in with my guard up. If you want a reliable EV, the Leaf is likely the best bet. But for people like me who like a sleek design and a lot of power, the Leaf is not an option.

@Mod_Man My family says they're gonna buy an electric car either a Tesla or Ford Mustang Mach E. They thought of Volkswagen ID4, but I told them they already have problems with the infotainment as not responsive and reputation of reliability. They're not gonna buy until 2028.

Definitely pass on the VW. They may have some good options out by 2028, but right now I wouldn't go with the ID4. As you said, they already have a few bugs and I'm sure more will surface as well.
