My wife inherited a Honda CR-V 2008 and we have not had many problems with it since we got it, but recently it overheated for the first time. The car has 273k miles on it and I’ve replaced the shocks, struts, sway bar links, inner and outer tie rods.
The car shakes a little when shifting sometimes and I’m assuming it’s the transmission. Also, it leaks antifreeze steadily and burns a little oil. Would you recommend trying to continue to fix this car or trade this car in? I know the economy and price of cars are a little ridiculous right now, but we need a car. Not to mention we only drive about 3 miles a day throughout the week and on the weekends we travel an hour and a half to our intern church in Alabama and then the same day travel the same distance back.
Right now Carmax and another dealership has offered us 3k for the car. My thought has been trade it it in while it still has value (before it blows up) or I’ve also thought I’m over reacting and should try and fix the car and run the guts out of it. If I’m going to fix it then I was thinking about putting a new thermostat in it and also replacing the hose on the bottom of the engine that I believe to be the culprit that is leaking the antifreeze. (Or should I replace the radiator? We had a pressure check done on it and the place said it was fine, but yet they could not find the hose that was leaking that took my friend 5 minutes to find.) Please help! Thank you so much!
$3k for 13yo SUV with 273k miles, and engine issues, sounds like a pretty good deal to me
Telling me to buy a Nissan is the worst advice I’ve ever heard..
Sorry about the extended comment earlier. I'm reposting my response to the overheating question here:
I think Scotty made a video on fixing overheating in cars cars. See if you can run through all the tests and isolate the problem or find a mechanic who can fix it. You might try to find a leak using UV dye and if you find one, maybe use some anti-leak sealants, either in the coolant reservoir or on the head gasket. I would say if you can do the repairs for like $800 or less, fix it and keep it. Honda's older automatic transmissions were somewhat weak, but you could get by for sometime by babying it.
If the repairs are over $1000 though, I would sell it or trade it in. it's not worth it at that point, it would be more of a mechanic's car or a part-out/project vehicle.
sell it and buy a nissan
