Car cuts off after starting it up when it's warm

Hi Scotty, I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla with a automatic transmission. Every once in a while when I'm driving it around and shut the car off to do some errands, after about 5 minutes when the engine is still fairly warm I start the car up and the engine would idle for a second and cut off. Sometimes I do that a couple of more times and it would still cut off. Sometimes I would press the accelerator a couple of times, wait a few seconds, and crank it. Sometimes it would start up and idle, other times it would not. Another occasion I waited for the engine to cool off a few minutes with the hood popped up and it would start up. What's causing the car to cut off after returning 5 minutes to start it up even when the engine is still warm?

Any check engine light illumination? Lower MPG than before? The first thing I would check is the air filter. A hot engine needs more air than a cold one, so it can be fussy if the air filter is clogged when it's starting hot.

Pushing the gas pedal before starting it doesn't do anything in a modern, fuel injected car. Back in the day of carburetors, that used to prime a cold engine to start. Holding the pedal to the floor while cranking one would clear a flooded engine and start it.

See if it has an "idle air control valve".

If it's designed like the old Honda's, the screen will carbon up and cause that symptom.

They will start and run fine when cold, but stutter when restarting warm.
