I have an 04 Malibu maxx LS with 235k all original motor and trans. I’ve noticed lately when I’m driving bout 35-40mph and let off gas and it down shifts kind of hard sometimes, especially when it’s cold out. Not able to check trans fluid because no dip stick.

That's not really true, it's just a lot more difficult. You have to check fluid level underneath via the fill plug, following manufacturer's instructions.
When is the last time the transmission was serviced?
