Hey Scotty, I have a 2017 Toyota Camry (4cylinder) that takes 0W-20. The dealer I purchased the car through has gave me 4 free oil changes. I was going to change it myself but I thought for 4 free oil changes why not let the dealer do it. So they ended up changing my oil and ended up putting 5W-30 instead of the 0W-20 that is required for the car. I purchased the car through a Chevy dealer so that’s probably why. Will this do anything to the car or could it eventually?
Thanks!
It'll wear out your engine faster and you'll probably have to go back to them for repairs, and at worst buy another car from them. Car dealerships make more money from maintenance and repairs than selling cars.
Sadly, many drivers only know oil change and don't know that there are different oils, or simply put their trust in the mechanics. Dealerships take advantage of peoples lack of car knowledge.
I'd go back and tell them to use the correct oil.
One thing I know is the manual may say they could use 0w30 once and next time, go back to 0w20. But who knows what oil your car had when you bought it.

It's best to stick with the viscosity the manufacturer recommended, 0W-20.
5W-30 is to heavy a viscosity - it is not "recommended".
But who knows what oil your car had when you bought it.
I hope, it had oil at all!
5w30 is a lot cheaper because of the huge quantities produced. 0w20 is higher quality oil and more expensive to produce.
The dealership is trying to save a buck at your expense. You should use what is specified on your cap or in the manual.
Don't put crap oil in your nice Toyota.
