Changing brakes with abs 2012 camry

Hey Scotty,

I going to change my brakes on my 2012 toyota camry 2.5, things I've read on the internet, some say to open the bleeder when pushing back the caliper (keep from contaminating the abs system), other people say its okay to just push the caliper back without opening the bleeder.

What is the truth??

Thanks,

Wesley

I asked Scotty about this after watching him change the brakes on a Mustang. He said if you compress the piston real slow you don't have to open the bleeder. I changed front and rear pads on my daughter's 2012 Camry without opening the bleeders. No problems. Used a C clamp to push the piston in slowly.

By the way, I use the caliper to hold the pads in place while putting the springs on. I couldn't keep the pads from popping out until I did this.

Oldandy, thank you for the prompt response! I'm so glad to hear this, I really didn't want to open up the system if I didn't have to. Great advice on the spring situation, I'll remember that one!
Thanks again!

Ahhh, that's what I was concerned about, guess there isn't a shortcut for this. Hate opening the system but for piece of mind I'd better.
Thanks!

You sometimes get seemingly conflicting advice from Scotty. This is the video of him doing a brake job last year, doesn't open the bleeders. Told me it wasn't necessary. Maybe it depends on the complexity of the vehicle. In the end, do what gives you peace of mind.

Yeah, that's what I'm running into on the net as well. I've been an airplane mechanic for 20 years and I'm a stickler for doing the job the way the manufacturer recommends, but I'm having no luck finding what Toyota recommends. It's also not my car and I want to make sure its done properly, as well as I don't want to mess their ABS system up. I did our Camry (06) without opening the bleeders and didn't have any issues, but now I'm nervous that I could mess something up. ????????? Maybe over thinking it

Well, it's not worth losing sleep over. Crack the bleeders and hope no air gets in. If it does, bleed the system enough to replace all the fluid, which it is probably due for anyway. Best of luck.
