Cleaning Alternator

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 V6 (Mercedes drive train).

I am currently in the works of investigating / fixing an oil leak from the front of the engine. The oil seems to have dripped onto the drivebelt which then splattered it all around the front of the engine - and also marinating the alternator...I already replaced one alternator a few years ago after being sloppy during an oil change where I spilled oil onto it (yes, brilliant design - the alternator is directly below the oil filler cap).

So, the question is: can I clean off the alternator with brake cleaner or is it best to leave it alone and just remove what I can with a rag?

All the best, Carsten

As far as the outside is concerned you can just wipe it off. The potential problem is how much oil got inside the alternator.
