I know you hate that car

Hi Scotty,

I bought a 2012 Volkswagen Passat 2.5 SE 92k miles a couple months ago for $10k + tax (around $1600) from a LandRover dealership.

So after a month I went to a VW service center and they recommended the next:

- Change all drive belts: $377

- Brake fluid exchange: $178

- Coolant service using STA $236

- 100K mile service: $692

Should I get rid of the car NOW or should I find local service that would make everything cheaper? OR should I go to VS service center?

Thanks a lot for all your videos Scotty!

Regards,

Damir B

Don't accept what the dealership tells you. If you have a trusted independent mechanic take it to them and ask for a second opinion to see if those things are really needed or not. And then even if needed it would cost less than the dealership. After you have a quote from an independent mechanic then you can decide.

Your owners manual knows your car best, it doesn't lie. Go read the maintenance schedule and look at what you need to change. You can go to a local service center instead of a dealership it's the same work but you pay a bit less, rule of thumb is, out of warranty, if you don't need to be at the dealership don't go there.

Getting rid of the car or not is a whole different question.

Regardless of the repairs, if I were you, I would sell that car and you a Honda of Toyota. Those cars are piles of junk that break in front of your very eyes. And one more thing:

Do not buy cars from dealerships, if you are lucky and don't get a junk car, you will end up paying way much more.

Every single time you go to a dealership, they are going to find something wrong with your car. Every. Single. Time.

Sure, some of it might be legit, but often times most are not. On top of that, even if it is legit, they are going to charge you wayyyyyyyyyyy more than what an independent shop would charge.

Like others said, checked the manual. See what is needed for maintenance.

Inspect the belts yourself. You should be able to see if they are worn.

That's a mistake, go to a normal mechanic - it should be much cheaper.

Should I get rid of the car NOW

If you can find anyone who'll pay that kind of money a 10 year old Passat with high milage (by VW standards) - YES!

That's literally DOUBLE the book value (~$6k), and even that's WAYYYYYY over what they usually would go for.

If you value your money, try to get rid of it while it's possible to do so without loosing a fortune on it.

EDIT: If that's a DSG, that's even a bigger reason to dump it.
