I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla with 110 k. Had an airbag warning light come on. I take it to to the local dealership and they they told me that there was an open in the clock spring and that it would be $795 to repair. I googled it and found the part for $25 and took me 15 minutes to replace. Should I ever take my car back there?
Are you kidding me? I wouldn't take my lawn mower to those guys. Good for you!
They’d probably want to sell you a whole new lawnmower, with all the bells and whistles.
Exactly right!
Now you know why so many of us refer to them as stealerships.
Your situation is one of the main reason this site exists - to help people fix their own vehicles and not get ripped off. Glad it worked out for you.
Good job, and with information at our fingertips nowadays - you can usually do a lot of these troubleshooting/repairs yourself. Of course, you need to have the desire and mechanical inclination to want to do it yourself. At the very least, you will be armed with knowledge. But yeah, avoid the stealership; at the very least, find a good, honest independent mechanic to do the work you don’t want to do yourself.
Well done!
Go take yourself & your family on a short vacation with the spare ~$700..
Labor costs are high and that's where the charge goes up. Most dealerships have a minimum charge for labor (one or two hours) so that's the price difference you see.
If you want to save the money, fix it yourself as that is always the cheapest way to go.
