[Solved] 1999 Toyota Corolla AE112R excessive vibration at idle in Australia

Hi Scotty and Friends

I have a 1999 AE112R Toyota Corolla, 160,000 kms (100,000 Miles) 1.8 litre, no codes as is pre OBDII, automatic transmission that has excessive vibration at idle. It drives OK and the fuel consumption is normal.

I bought it a year ago from an old lady she owned it it's whole life and it was well maintained.

I have tried the following:

* Changed Timing Belt

* Replaced all four engine mounts

* Spark plugs , leads and distributor cap

* Alternator (the bearings went)

* Air filter

* Checked for vacuum leaks with smoke machine

* Cleaned throttle, intake manifold and combustion chambers

* Cleaned MAP (Pre MAF sensor)

I am at a loss of what it could be. The vibration dissapears over 1000 rpm.

It is driving me bananas I would appreciate any help.

Many thanks

Roger

Scotty made a video on your exact problem (albeit different vehicle) - https://youtu.be/gdJ0ghtwBAw

Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately I have already replaced the motor and tranmission mounts as he suggested but it has made no difference.

I know that mate, I meant he mentioned the injectors could be a potential cause. Have you tried pressure cleaning your injectors already?

Sorry I misunderstood. I have run loads of quality injector cleaner through it with no improvement. I havent paid to have pressure cleaning done. It starts fine with no misfire.

Hi
Did you ever resolve this issue? I have exactly the same issue with the same car

Harmonic balancer has failed. It's metal/rubber/metal....deteriorates over time. Can't absorb crankshaft torsional vibrations.

This is why I thought it may need to get looked at by a professional mechanic.

I have considered the harmonic balancer. But as the vibrations disappear as the revs go up I don't think it is it. If the HB is bad I would imagine the vibrations would get worse as the RPM inreases. Thanks anyway

Have you checked your transmission mounts?

Also, when it vibrates excessively, is the car in drive with your foot on the brake or in Park/Neutral?

Hi, I have replaced the transmission and engine mounts. There is no change to the vibration in Drive or Neutral.

If it isn’t your fuel injectors, you’d need to have the car looked at by a good independent mechanic. Do you lose coolant at all? Is the coolant clean?

It has clean and full coolent. It doesnt drip a drop of anything. It's a Toyota. There are no good mechanics in my area.

Have you pressure test the fuel pump?

and check the idle control valve too.

Hi there I havnt checked the fuel pump but it runs OK at high load. I have cleaned the idle control valve. The idle is stable enough the engine just vibrates to much at idle.
Thanks again

Yaser I used the diagnostic panel to check the Idle control valve and it appears to be ok. Thanks

This car is not pre obd2 that became mandatory in 1996 I believe. Is it like a misfire? I would take a listen to the fuel injectors or try disconnecting them one at a time to see if any one cylinder has no or minimal change in comparison. Also check fuel pressure to make sure the pumps not weak and the car is just starving for fuel. Good luck

mandatory where? He obviously is not in the United States.

Definitely no OBD2 port. No misfire and no injector noise. I havent checked the fuel pressure but it runs fine at high load. I also replaced the ignition coil with no change. Thanks

I missed the whole not United States in the us obd2 was made mandatory by Law in 1996

I have exactly the same issue with the same car

You may have similar symptoms with different causes. Did you try any of the troubleshooting mentioned here?

fuel injection cleaning? Clean out the EGR?

You're better off posting a new a question.

Thanks for your reply and yes maybe a new question is warranted but given I didn't see the OP stating that any of the suggested solutions fixed the issue (notwithstanding the Title has a solved next to it) I thought I would ask as a follow up. Or have I missed something in the OP's responses above?

The car has 90k kms and the engine mounts have been replaced and like the OP nothing changed. Hence the follow up.
