[Solved] Date vs. Mileage on oil changes

Dear Scotty,

I'm driving a 2016 Honda HRV

  • I don't put many miles on my car anymore, so the time frame on an oil change comes up long before I reach the number of miles needed. That's including your recommendation of 5k miles. Does synthetic oil deteriorate over time and is it necessary to abide by the sticker date? Apologies if you have answered this before. Appreciate all you do.

Thanks

5000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.  What in the world is a "sticker date?"

Sticker date is the date the oil change place or dealer places on the oil change sticker. They put a date and a mileage to take it in for an oil change.

Thanks. Having never paid anyone to do my oil changes, I didn't know what that was. Thanks! @kaizen

Hahaha! Seriously, it’s cool that you don’t know, because you do it yourself!

Like what @doc said, 5000 miles or 1 year. Some stickers will say 6 months, but that is too frequent, unless harsh conditions, imho.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can possibly follow the “Maintenance Minder” on the dashboard. It is those number and letters like A1 B2 or or something like that. The computer calculates when to do oil changes based on your driving habits.  But I can never remember the codes, so I just stick to 5000 miles or 1 year.
