Diagnostic Devices

I want to get my husband a car monitor device (diagnostic thingie) for Christmas but am totally clueless about them.  It's the device that checks everything - Scotty uses one on his videos sometimes.  What would be a good brand for a hobbyist - he is not a technician?  But I think he would have fun running diagnostics on the cars.  I don't know the best brands or the places to buy them.  Thanks for the help.

Blue Driver is a good beginner tool and it's only about a $100. Does your husband use a smart phone?

I think the fancier all in one units with screen start at around $300.

See the FAQ for scan tool recommendations.

When it's on sale on Amazon (which happens very often), the Blue Driver scan tool is a fantastic deal at only $85. It scans a ton of codes for its price-point, has the ability to clear codes, tells you how common each code might be, and provides a description for each code.

I've used several scanners at lower prices and I must say that this is a fantastic choice and probably the best value scanner under $200.
