Scotty, is it true that running some transmission fluid in your engine will clean up any gunk that has built up, or free up sticking lifters?

No. You may destroy your engine. Engines of that era typically use much heavier fluid than a typical transmission does. Modern motor oil that is the right grade is the only thing I would ever use.
