Could a high idle (900-1000rpm) make an automatic transmission go hard into gear (Drive)?

Yes.
Although 900rpm is still relatively normal. >1100rpm usually lurches the vehicle forward (or backward).
^^^ When I’m in a hurry & ain't nobody got time for that waiting game.
